Shardiya Navratri Day 1: Maa Shailputri's Origin, Significance, Puja Vidhi, and Mantras!
Shardiya Navratri is a nine-day celebration of the divine feminine, and it begins with the worship of Maa Shailputri, the very first form of Goddess Durga. Her name, a combination of "Shail" (mountain) and "Putri" (daughter), perfectly describes her as the daughter of the mountains. The first day of Navratri is a day of pure devotion, innocence, and spiritual awakening, as devotees begin their sacred journey.
Origin and Significance
The worship of Maa Shailputri is rooted in a powerful legend. She is the divine reincarnation of Goddess Sati, who was the daughter of King Daksha. Sati, unable to bear her father's disrespect towards her husband, Lord Shiva, self-immolated herself in a ritual fire. She was then reborn as the daughter of the King of the Himalayas, Himavan. As the first form of the goddess and a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings, Maa Shailputri represents the start of the spiritual path that leads to the ultimate union with the divine. She embodies purity, peace, and the raw power of nature.
Depiction and Symbolism
Maa Shailputri's depiction is a beautiful blend of serenity and strength. She is portrayed as a young goddess, riding atop a bull named Nandi.
- Bull (Nandi): Symbolizes Dharma (righteousness) and stability. Her mount reflects her grounded nature and control over her own being.
- Trident (Trishul): Held in her right hand, the trident represents the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) and signifies her power to control the three worlds.
- Lotus Flower: Held in her left hand, the lotus symbolizes purity, love, and detachment from worldly desires, much like a lotus that blooms in muddy water without being tainted by it.
Puja Vidhi and Offerings (Bhog)
On the first day of Navratri, the most important ritual is Ghatasthapana, or the installation of the sacred pot. After this, devotees begin the worship of Maa Shailputri.
How to Worship:
- Preparation: Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes.
- Puja Sthapana: Place the idol or photo of Maa Shailputri on a clean altar.
- Offerings: Offer her favorite things to seek her blessings.
- Mantra Chanting: Recite her mantras with a pure heart.
- Aarti: Conclude the puja by performing her aarti.
Favourite Food (Bhog): Maa Shailputri's favourite food is made from pure cow ghee. Offering pure ghee or a dessert made from ghee is considered highly auspicious on this day. Favourite Flowers: White flowers, especially jasmine or hibiscus, are her favourite.

Chanting these sacred verses on Day 1 is believed to bring immense peace and fulfill a devotee's wishes.

Stuti (Hymn): या देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ शैलपुत्री रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥ (Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Shailputri Rupena Samsthita. Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah॥)
Meaning: I bow to the Goddess who is established in all beings in the form of Maa Shailputri.
Aarti: जय अम्बे गौरी, मैया जय श्यामा गौरी। तुमको निशदिन ध्यावत, हरि ब्रह्मा शिवजी॥ (Jai Ambe Gauri, Maiya Jai Shyama Gauri. Tumko Nishdin Dhyavat, Hari Brahma Shivji॥)
This is a very common aarti for Maa Durga that is chanted on all nine days. It glorifies the Goddess as a whole.
