Chaitra Navratri 2026: Maa Brahmacharini Puja and Significance!

The second day of Chaitra Navratri 2026 falls on Friday, March 20, 2026. This day is dedicated to Maa Brahmacharini, the second manifestation of Goddess Durga. Known as the embodiment of penance, virtue, and noble conduct, her worship is central to gaining emotional strength and spiritual discipline.

The Legend of Maa Brahmacharini

The name "Brahmacharini" is derived from two words: Brahma (tapasya or penance) and Charini (one who performs).

According to ancient scriptures, in her previous birth as the daughter of King Himalaya, the Goddess performed severe penance for thousands of years to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. She spent 1,000 years eating only fruits and flowers, followed by another 100 years surviving on vegetables. Eventually, she gave up even dry leaves (earning the name Aparna) and lived only on air. Her unwavering determination moved the gods, and Lord Brahma blessed her, leading to her divine union with Lord Shiva.

Significance of Worshipping Day 2

Worshipping Maa Brahmacharini helps devotees:

  • Enhance Willpower: Her energy grants the strength to remain focused on goals despite obstacles.
  • Achieve Mental Peace: She is known to reduce stress, anger, and anxiety.
  • Spiritual Growth: She governs the Swadhisthana Chakra, and her grace helps in the upward movement of energy (Kundalini).

How to Worship Maa Brahmacharini (Puja Vidhi)

The rituals for the second day are focused on simplicity and devotion.

  1. Preparation: Wake up during Brahma Muhurat (4:00 AM – 5:30 AM), take a bath, and wear clean clothes.
  2. Kalash Puja: Offer prayers first to the Ghatasthapana Kalash established on Day 1.
  3. Invocation: Invoke Maa Brahmacharini by offering flowers, akshat (raw rice), and sandalwood paste (chandan).
  4. Bhog Offering: Offer her favorite items—sugar (mishri), honey, and Panchamrit.
  5. Aarti: Conclude the puja by performing the Aarti of Maa Brahmacharini and distributing prasad.

What to Offer (Bhog and Flowers)

  • Flowers: She loves Jasmine (Chameli) or any white/yellow flowers like Marigold or Lotus.
  • Bhog: Plain sugar, mishri, or milk-based sweets like kheer are traditionally offered.
