Chaitra Navratri 2026: Maa Brahmacharini Puja and Significance!
The second day of Chaitra Navratri 2026 falls on Friday, March 20, 2026. This day is dedicated to Maa Brahmacharini, the second manifestation of Goddess Durga. Known as the embodiment of penance, virtue, and noble conduct, her worship is central to gaining emotional strength and spiritual discipline.
The Legend of Maa Brahmacharini
The name "Brahmacharini" is derived from two
words: Brahma (tapasya or penance) and Charini (one who
performs).
According to ancient scriptures, in her previous birth as
the daughter of King Himalaya, the Goddess performed severe penance for
thousands of years to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. She spent 1,000 years
eating only fruits and flowers, followed by another 100 years surviving on
vegetables. Eventually, she gave up even dry leaves (earning the name Aparna)
and lived only on air. Her unwavering determination moved the gods, and Lord
Brahma blessed her, leading to her divine union with Lord Shiva.
