Shri Amarnathji Yatra Begins: High-Tech Security, AI Drones Deployed as First Convoy Leaves Jammu!

The highly anticipated and deeply sacred annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 officially got underway on July 2, 2026, as Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ceremonially flagged off the inaugural batch of pilgrims. Devotees gathered early in the morning at the heavily guarded Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp in Jammu, filled with immense religious fervor and chanting powerful slogans like "Bam Bam Bhole" and "Har Har Mahadev."

The formal 57-day pilgrimage treks began simultaneously on July 3, 2026 via the twin traditional routes, marking the commencement of one of India's most significant spiritual journeys.

The First Batch: Key Statistics & Route Breakdown

The first leg of the yatra saw an enthusiastic turnout of devotees eager to catch a glimpse of the naturally formed ice Shivling, which stands at an altitude of 3,880 metres in the south Kashmir Himalayas.

According to senior administrative officials, a total of 4,822 pilgrims left the Jammu base camp in a tightly monitored convoy comprising 259 light and heavy vehicles (including 106 buses and 111 Light Motor Vehicles). The batch split into two separate convoys depending on their chosen routes:

• The Traditional Pahalgam Route (Anantnag District): 2,510 pilgrims opted for this longer, more gradual 48-km trek starting from the Nunwan-Pahalgam base camp.

• The Shorter Baltal Route (Ganderbal District): 2,312 pilgrims headed towards the steeper, one-way 14-km trek originating from the Baltal base camp.

Following historical security assessments and general high-alert protocols across the Union Territory, the J&K administration, Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and local police have deployed an absolute fortress-like security grid.

To ensure zero gaps in transit safety along the treacherous Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the security framework features advanced technical integration:

High-Tech Vigilance: For the 2026 season, authorities have integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) surveillance grids and continuous drone monitoring across sensitive valley points. Every single pilgrim vehicle and individual traveler is being mapped in real-time using an RFID-based tracking system.

Furthermore, dedicated Road Opening Parties (ROPs) and K9 units completely sanitized the highway paths through Udhampur and the critical Navyug Tunnel in Qazigund before the convoy's departure.
