Mantras for Pitru Paksha Puja and Tarpan in English and Hindi!

On the holy occasion of Shraddh Paksha, the method of offering water to ancestors is called Tarpan. How should tarpan be done, which mantras should be recited at the time of tarpan and how many times water should be given in the name of ancestors.

1.  Pitru Gayatri Mantra is chanted 11 times as an act of invitation of your Pitrus:

“Om Pitru Ganaaya Vidmahe Jagat Dhaariney Dheemahi Tannoh Pitro Prachodayaat.”

2.  Avaahanam Mantra: The method of offering water to ancestors is called Tarpan. How should tarpan be done, which mantras should be recited at the time of tarpan and how many times water should be given in the name of ancestors.

Let us now know this: - With Kush in hands, one should meditate on the ancestors with folded hands and invite them: - “Om Aagachhantu Me Pitar Avam Grihanantu Jalaanjalim.”, the meaning of this mantra is, O ancestors, come and accept Jalanjali.

The meaning of the above mantra is “I wholeheartedly invite you (ancestors) into my home to accept my offering of sesame seeds & water to quench your hunger & thirst”

3. Tarpan mantra to give water to father: Take the name of your Gotra and say, Gotra Asmatpita (father's name) Sharma Vasurupat Tripyatamidam Tilodkam Ganga Jalan Va Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah.

4. Tarpan Mantra to give water to Pitamah (Grand Father):

Take the name of your Gotra and say, Gotra Asmatpitamah (Grandfather's name) Sharma Vasurupat Tripyatamidam Tilodkam Ganga Jalan Va Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah. Give water to the grandfather three times with this mantra.

“गोत्रे अस्मत्पितामह (पितामह का नाम) शर्मा वसुरूपत् तृप्यतमिदं तिलोदकम गंगा जलं वा तस्मै स्वधा नमः, तस्मै स्वधा नमः, तस्मै स्वधा नमः। इस मंत्र से पितामह को भी 3 बार जल दें।“

5. Tarpan Mantra to give water to Tarpan Mata (Mother):

Those whose mother has left this world should also give water to their mother. The mantra for giving water to mother is different from that for father and grandfather. The rules for giving them water are also different. Since the mother's debt is considered the greatest, she is given water more often than the father.

Mantra to give water to mother: (Take the name of the Gotra) Gotra Asmanmata (name of the mother) Devi Vasurupast Tripyatamidam Tilodakam Ganga Jal Va Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah. After reciting this mantra, give Jalanjali 16 times in the east direction, 7 times in the north direction and 14 times in the south direction.

“(गोत्र का नाम लें) गोत्रे अस्मन्माता (माता का नाम) देवी वसुरूपास्त् तृप्यतमिदं तिलोदकम गंगा जल वा तस्मै स्वधा नमः, तस्मै स्वधा नमः, तस्मै स्वधा नमः।“

इस मंत्र को पढ़कर जलांजलि पूर्व दिशा में 16 बार, उत्तर दिशा में 7 बार और दक्षिण दिशा में 14 बार दें।

6. Tarpan in the name of grandmother: (Take the name of the Gotra) Gotra Pitama (Grandmother's name) Devi Vasurupast Tripyatamidam Tilodakam Ganga Jal Va Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah, Tasmai Swadha Namah.

As many times as you have given water to your mother, give water to your grandmother with this mantra. In Shraddha, reverence is of utmost importance, hence while giving water, definitely keep reverence for your parents and ancestors in your mind.

The ancestors accept only the food and water given with devotion. If there is no Shraddha sentiment then the ancestors do not accept it.

After reciting this mantra, give Jalanjali 16 times in the east direction, 7 times in the north direction and 14 times in the south direction.

Pitru Paksha Puja and Tarpan Ritual Method with ending Mantra:

Take the black sesame seeds with your right hand. While chanting Pitru Mantra, pour water over the sesame seeds on the dish. Water must flow between your thumb and index finger rather than from the front of your palm and over the other fingers. As you face East, the water will flow between your thumb and index finger towards the south. Pitrus's direction is south. This is the ideal method to accomplish it as we are sitting facing east.

If you have anything else to tell Pitrus, you can do so now. Finally, you may urge that they continue to Vishnu-Lok, whose gates you had sought to open by your prayers and good wishes.

The ancestors accept only the food and water given with devotion. If there is no Shraddha sentiment then the ancestors do not accept it.

Shraddha Ritual for three generations only:

Shraddha is only for three generations. According to religious scriptures, when the Sun enters Virgo, the ancestors from the other world come back to their relatives. The ancestors of three generations are counted in godlike status.

Father is considered equal to Vasu, Rudra is equal to grandfather and great grandfather is equal to Aditya. One reason behind this is that human memory is limited to only three generations.

In Shraddha Paksha, offerings are made with water and sesame seeds (Devanna). That which supports us from birth till salvation is water. Moles have been called Devanna. Only this gives satisfaction to the ancestors.

If you don't remember the date of death:

● Pratipada maternal grandparents

●Panchami who died unmarried.

●Navmi Mata and other women.

● Ekadashi and Dwadashi father, grandfather

● Chaturdashi untimely death has occurred.

●Amavasya of all the ancestors, known and unknown.

(Shraddha should be performed on the same Hindi date on which death occurred. Otherwise, perform it on Pitru Amavasya.)

Do this for the peace of ancestral:

- Recite one rosary of Om Pitra Devtabhayo Namah (ऊं पितृदेवताभ्यो नम:) every day
- Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya, keep chanting Gayatri Mantra.

“ऊं नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय”

Gayatri Mantra: “Om Bhur Bhavah Swaahaa Tat Savitru Varenyam Bhargo Devasya Deemahi, Dheeyo Yonahah Prachodayaat”.
