About Lord Shani

    Lord Shani, also known as Shanidev, is one of the most revered and often feared deities in the Hindu pantheon. He is the son of Surya (the Sun God) and Chhaya, and the elder brother of Yama (the God of Death). Often associated with Saturn, the seventh planet in our solar system, Shani is considered the God of Justice, Karma, and Retribution. Understanding his significance and how to appease him can bring balance and harmony into your life.


    Meaning of the Shloka

    • Om: A sacred syllable representing the Supreme Brahman.
    • Hreem: The Maya Bija, representing power or energy.
    • Nilanjana: Blue or dark blue in color, representing the color of Lord Shani.
    • Samabhasam: One who possesses a similar or equal radiance.
    • Raviputram: Son of Ravi (the Sun), also the brother of Yama.
    • Yamagrajam: Elder brother of Yama, the God of Death.
    • Chhaya: Chhaya Devi, the consort of Surya (Sun God) and mother of Shani.
    • Martanda: Another name for Surya, the Sun God.
    • Sambhutam: One who is born from.
    • Tam: To him.
    • Namami: I bow down or salute.
    • Shanaischaram: Another name for Lord Shani, the slow-moving one.

    Translation

    I bow down to Lord Shani, who has a radiance similar to blue or dark blue, who is the son of the Sun, the elder brother of Yama, and who was born from Chhaya and Martanda (the Sun).

    Significance of the Shloka

    Chanting this shloka is believed to invoke the blessings of Lord Shani. Lord Shani is the deity who bestows the fruits of one's karma. By reciting this shloka, we can purify our karmas and receive Lord Shani's grace.

    • This shloka can be chanted daily, either in the morning or evening.
    • Before chanting, offer your salutations to Lord Shani.
