Kalashtami: Worshipping Kaal Bhairav, The Fierce Guardian of Time!
Kalashtami, also known as Kala Ashtami or Masik Kalashtami, is a significant Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fierce, protective manifestation (Rudra Roopa) of Lord Shiva. Observed on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) every month, this day is highly auspicious for conquering fear, eliminating negativity, and seeking liberation from Karmic debts.
Worshipping Kaal Bhairav on Kalashtami is believed to offer
divine protection from evil forces and ensure success against adversaries. The
most important Kalashtami of the year is Kaal Bhairav Jayanti (or
Bhairav Ashtami), which falls in the month of Margashirsha (November/December).
The Significance of Kaal Bhairav and Kalashtami
The name Kaal Bhairav is derived from two words: 'Kaal'
meaning time or death, and 'Bhairav' meaning a protective
and fearful form of Shiva. He is revered as the God of Time and the Guardian
of Kashi (Varanasi).
- Guardian
of Time: As the Lord of Time, worshipping him helps devotees utilize
their time effectively and overcome the fear of death and uncertainty.
- Remover
of Obstacles: Lord Bhairav is invoked to remove all forms of
obstacles, negative energies, and the effects of black magic.
- Controller
of Ego: According to the legends, Kaal Bhairav was manifested to
destroy the ego of Lord Brahma, teaching devotees the importance of
humility and surrendering their pride.
- Relief
from Planetary Doshas: Devotees believe that sincere worship on this
day can alleviate the ill effects of malefic planets like Shani
(Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu.
Kalashtami Vrat Katha (The Legend)
The origin of Lord Kaal Bhairav is narrated in the Shiva
Purana and Skanda Purana.
Once, a fierce argument arose between Lord Brahma and Lord
Vishnu over who was the supreme deity. Lord Brahma, in his arrogance, insulted
Lord Shiva. Unable to tolerate this disrespect, Lord Shiva manifested the
terrifying form of Kaal Bhairav.
In a burst of fury, Kaal Bhairav immediately severed one of
Lord Brahma's five heads, thereby humbling Brahma's pride. Although a
justifiable act to protect the dignity of the Supreme Being, Kaal Bhairav
incurred the sin of Brahma Hatya (killing a Brahmin) and was compelled
to wander the world as a penitent.
Finally, upon reaching the holy city of Varanasi (Kashi),
the sin of Brahma Hatya was absolved. Since then, Lord Shiva appointed
Kaal Bhairav as the Kshetrapal (City Guardian) of Varanasi, and devotees
there worship him fervently to cleanse their sins and gain protection.
Kalashtami Puja Vidhi (Rituals and Fasting)
Devotees observe a strict fast (vrat) and perform
specific rituals to seek the blessings of Kaal Bhairav. The puja is ideally
performed at night, as the Kaal Bhairav form of Shiva appeared at midnight.
- Sankalp
and Fasting: Wake up early, take a holy bath, and take a vow (Sankalp)
to observe the fast for the day. Many observe a Nirjala (without
water) fast, while others consume fruits and milk (Falahari Vrat).
- Evening/Night
Puja: Set up an altar and place the idol or image of Lord Kaal
Bhairav, sometimes accompanied by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
- Offerings:
Offerings typically include black sesame seeds, mustard oil,
black gram (Urad Dal), flowers, and a special sweet bread
called Meetha Rot (made with wheat flour and jaggery).
- Lighting
the Lamp: It is highly auspicious to light a mustard oil lamp
(diya) in front of the deity.
- Recitation:
Recite the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam and chant the Kaal Bhairav
Mantra (see mantra section below) with utmost devotion.
- Midnight
Aarti: The midnight aarti (ritual of light) is considered the
most powerful time for worship.
- Feeding
Dogs: Since the black dog is the sacred Vahana (vehicle)
of Lord Bhairav, feeding black dogs milk, curd, or sweet rotis on this day
is considered extremely auspicious and earns immense merit.
- Paren
(Breaking the Fast): The fast is usually broken the next morning after
performing the final morning prayers.
The Powerful Kaal Bhairav Mantra
Chanting this mantra helps in overcoming fear, obstacles,
and negative influences:
“ॐ
ह्रीं बटुकाय आपदुद्धारणाय कुरू कुरू बटुकाय ह्रीं” (Om Hreem
Batukaay Aapadduddharanaay Kuru Kuru Batukaay Hreem)
