Chaitra Navratri 2026 Day 8: Maa Mahagauri (Maha Ashtami) Puja & Significance!
The eighth day of Chaitra Navratri is celebrated as Maha Ashtami. It is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri, the symbol of purity, serenity, and tranquility. Her name literally means "Extremely White" (Maha = Great, Gauri = White/Fair), representing her radiant and stainless nature.
In 2026, Maha Ashtami falls on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
The Legend of Maa Mahagauri
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati performed intense penance to obtain Lord Shiva as her husband. Due to her severe austerities in the forest, her body turned dark and was covered in dust. When Lord Shiva finally accepted her devotion, he washed her with the holy water of the Ganges, which restored her natural radiance, making her glow like a white pearl. Thus, she became known as Mahagauri.
She is depicted with four arms, riding a white bull (Vrushabha). She holds a trident and a tambourine (damru), while her other two hands are in the Abhaya (protection) and Varada (blessing) mudras.
