Weather Today Heatwave: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Delhi-UP, Punjab, and Rajasthan as Mercury Touches 45°C!
North and Northwest India are bracing for the first severe
stretch of summer as temperatures skyrocket across the plains. The Indian
Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Heatwave Yellow Alert
for Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, warning residents of
blistering daytime temperatures and relentless loo conditions.
Meanwhile, a stark weather contrast is playing out in the
southern, hilly, and northeastern corners of the country, where heavy rainfall
and thunderstorms are providing much-needed relief.
Plains on Fire: Delhi-UP and Rajasthan Cross 43–45°C
According to the IMD, a dry westerly wind blowing from the
desert regions is pushing maximum temperatures 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above the
seasonal normal across the plains.
- Delhi
NCR Forecast: The national capital is looking at clear skies and
unfiltered solar radiation this week. The maximum temperature is projected
to hover between 43°C and 45°C, while nights will offer little
comfort with minimum temperatures sticking to a warm 27°C to 28°C.
- Uttar
Pradesh & Punjab: Severe heatwave conditions are expanding across
western and central UP, alongside southern Punjab. Severe heat alerts have
been placed for districts experiencing prolonged exposure to direct
sunlight.
- Rajasthan’s
Boiling Point: Several districts in western Rajasthan have already
breached the 45°C mark. The state is expected to experience intense
heatwave and dust-storm combinations over the next few days.
Weather Contrast: Rain and Thunderstorms Alert for Hills
and Northeast
While the plains turn into a virtual furnace, a fresh
Western Disturbance is bringing volatile weather to the northern mountains and
northeastern states.
- Rainfall
in the Western Himalayas: The IMD has issued a warning for Jammu
& Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from May 19 to May
23. These regions are expected to witness scattered rainfall,
thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging between 40–50 km/h.
- Northeast
Storm Alert: States like Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are
under a thunder-and-lightning watch. Fast-moving squalls accompanied by
heavy downpours are expected to keep temperatures significantly cooler in
the region.
IMD Health Advisory: How to Stay Safe During a Heatwave
With the yellow alert in place, health authorities urge
citizens—especially children, the elderly, and outdoor laborers—to take severe
heat precautions between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
- Hydrate
Continuously: Drink ample water at regular intervals, even if you do
not feel immediately thirsty.
- Traditional
Coolants: Consume electrolyte-rich fluids like ORS, buttermilk
(chaas), lemon water, and raw mango juices (Aam Panna) to maintain
internal body temperature.
- Smart
Clothing: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose cotton garments.
Always cover your head with a cloth, hat, or umbrella when stepping
outdoors.
